Android Awakening
Androids are machines designed to look and act like humans, machines that can be programmed and controlled in order to serve their masters. They may appear like intelligent and self-determining beings, but due to the absence of consciousness their decisions are limited to mere reactions.
It appears to me that most of us humans live in a state of such an android mind. We are conditioned and programmed by traditions, religions, societies and demagogies, regularly receiving uploads of beliefs, "political correctness updates" and reductionistic scientific models describing our reality. No matter what programs we allow to take action in our lives, they all have one aspect in common: They distract us from the genuine reality of our consciousness, our awareness, they limit our freedom of choice, they cripple our creativity and our potentials. They downgrade us to remotely controlled units of those who are in leading positions. This way we become ruled by male-dominant ruthlessness, insatiable and power-hungry technocrats which were incubated in the corrupt political and financial hierarchies of our post-democratic reality. Our lives are defined by materialistic morons who aren't even able to recognize their own consciousness and consequently deny the existence of any consciousness at all, coming up with ridiculous assumptions that consciousness is just an "illusion", a by-product of elementary particles which somehow just blindly and coincidentally transformed into a highly organized biosphere in some billions of years.
We are sedated and distracted by a vast machinery of entertainment, fashion, fear, guilt, terror and "anti-terror", misinformed, blinded and dehumanized. Nevertheless, I believe that we are more than Androids and that we can get rid of all these mind-parasites who dictate us what we are allowed to believe, to achieve, to wish, to dream about, to eat, to drink, to smoke, to enjoy. We have the potential to make real decisions, we can deinstall all that crap from our brains! So unplug the cables, cut the wires, wake up androids, remember who you really are!

Galerie Szaal aus Wien zeigt die Sonderausstellung:

DE ES "Planetarier"

Unter dem Motto „Art Personalities" präsentiert Galerie Szaal immer wieder bedeutende österreichische Künstlerpersönlichkeiten der Gegenwart. Diesmal fiel ihre Wahl auf DE ES.

DE ES wurde 1942 in Gresten, Niederösterreich, als Dieter Schwertberger geboren.

Der Künstler studierte zunächst an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Malerei bei Sergius Pauser und Maltechnik der Alten Meister bei Ernst Fuchs. 1968 übersiedelte Schwertberger in die Schweiz, wo er bereits mit zahlreichen Ausstellungen reüssierte. Nach der Rückkehr 1972 wurde er Assistent von Ernst Fuchs auf der Sommerakademie in Reichenau. Ab 1975 folgte ein elfjähriger Aufenthalt in New York, wo die ersten Bilder für sein Lebensprojekt „Friedensdom" – ein Bauwerk für einen Zyklus aus hundert Bildern – entstanden. Seit 1986 lebt und arbeitet der Künstler in Wien.

Zu Beginn der 60er Jahre malte Schwertberger surreale, utopische Räume und Szenerien, die formal zunächst eher dem Phantastischen Realismus zuzuordnen waren. Im Lauf der Zeit entwickelte er daraus einen eigenen, sehr persönlichen Stil, der ihn zu einem der herausragenden Vertreter der „visionary art" werden ließ – Schwertberger betrachtet sich als Suchender, der das Gefundene in der „Sprache der Bilder" mitteilt. Seine Botschaft von „Sinn und Verwandlung" gewinnt klaren Ausdruck und Intensität durch präzisen Umgang mit Licht, Raum und Textur.

Über die „Planetarier", die während der WIKAM im Atrium des Palais Niederösterreich ausgestellt sind und auch erworben werden können, sagt der Künstler: „Diese sind Friedenswächter, die aus einer Welt ohne Grenze", aus der Dimension der Ganzheit kommen. Da sie alle gleich und doch auch alle verschieden sind, regen sie den Dialog von „Vielheit und Einheit", „Gleichheit und Unterschied" an."

Diese überlebensgroßen Skulpturen wurden bereits mehrmals erfolgreich im In- und Ausland gezeigt. So wurden im Jahre 1991 anlässlich der 800 Jahre Feier der Stadt Bern 40 „Planetarier" auf dem Gurtenberg ausgestellt, und im Jahre 2000 fand die Installation „100 Planetarier Am Himmel" in Wien statt.

On November 8th, the 51st Exhibition of the longest -running group of Fantastic/visionary artists opens in London at La Galleria, Pall Mall. The Society for Art of Imagination was founded in 1961 by a small group of 5 artists, but has grown to be one of the largest groups of Visionary artists, with over 400 members from 23 countries. It has also been registered as an American Charity.

This Exhibition will be opened by a world renown harpist, Professor David Watkins, who will give a recital of harp music after his opening speech.
Another feature of this show will be the emphasis on large Sculptures, which will for the first time challenge the dominance of paintings. There will be originals and prints, with work from many artists including Giger, Laurie Lipton, Brigid Marlin and Michael Fuchs. Altogether it should be an exciting show!
The Exhibition runs from the 7th - 12th of November

Il 2 novembre prossimo si inaugura a Palazzo Valentini(Via IV novembre 119/A, Sala Egon Furstenberg, ore 18,00) la mostra di un pittore singolare: Felice Pedretti, nato in un sobborgo di Città del Capo, dove comincia ben presto a disegnare e a dipingere, ma a sedici anni condotto dai genitori a Roma, dove ha la fortuna di conoscere Luigi Ferrero, un artista che lavora per il Vaticano e che lo avvia allo studio dell'arte antica e del restauro. Ma allo studio dei maestri antichi aggiunge lo studio di alcuni maestri moderni, fra cui Giorgio de Chirico, per il quale concepisce una vera propria passione, senza rinunciare però a conquistarsi un proprio stile. Egli può essere definito un neometafisico. E’ presentato in catalogo da Costanzo Costantini, il critico del "Messaggero" che ha dedicato al fondatore della metafisica e al precursore del surrealismo due libri: Il pittore glorioso, che apparve presso Sugarco nel I978, quando il pictor optimus era ancora vivo, e IL Monomaco - colui che combatte da solo, pubblicato dalla Galleria Ulisse di Roma. La mostra, che resterà aperta sino all’11 novembre 2011, si avvale anche dei contributi critici della professoressa Maria Teresa Benedetti e del professore Roberto Maria Siena.

Opening on November 2, at Palazzo Valentini in Rome, an exhibition of a unusual painter, Felice Pedretti, who was born in a suburb of Cape Town, where he began in early age to draw and paint. At age sixteen he moved with his parents to Rome, where he had the fortune to meet Luigi Ferrero, an Artist who worked for the Vatican and that initiated him to the study of ancient art and restoration. To the study of old masters he added some modern masters, including Giorgio de Chirico, for whom he conceived a true passion, though without renouncing to achieve his own style. He may be considered a neo-metaphysical Artist. He is presented in the catalog by Costanzo Costantini, the famous Art critic and journalist that dedicated to the founder of metaphysics and the precursor of surrealism two books: The glorious painter, that appeared at Sugarco in I978, while the "pictor optimus" was still alive, and The Monomachus - one who fights alone; published by Ulysses Gallery in Rome. Professor Maria Teresa Benedetti and Professor Roberto Maria Siena, two other historian critics, will also add their critical contributions.

The exhibition will remain open until the 11th of November 2011.

Irina Lesyk

Lesik Irina wurde am 18. April 1983 in Chisinau, Republik Moldavien, geboren. Schon als Schulkind entdeckte sie ihre Leidenschaft für die Kunst, und beschloss, diese zum Beruf zu machen.
2002 absolvierte sie das College für Malerei, und 2007 die Akademie für Theaterwissenschaft, Musik und Malerei.
Lesik Iren nahm an zahlreichen Ausstellungen in Moldavien und Russland teil und hat sich inzwischen auch als Fotografin einen Namen gemacht. Ihre Bilder befinden sich in Privatsammlungen u.a. in Russland, Italien, Südafrika und Deutschland.

Lesik Irina was born on 18 April 1983 in Chisinau, Moldova Republic. Even as a schoolgirl, she discovered her passion for art and decided to make this into a career.
In 2002 she graduated from the College of Painting, and in 2007 the Academy of Theatre Studies, Music and Painting.
Lesik Irina took part in numerous exhibitions in Russia and Moldova, and has since made a name foe herself as a photographer. Her paintings are in private collections in in Russia, Italy, South Africa and Germany.

Eine der weltweit ältesten Galerien für phantastische Kunst, die Galerie 10 in Wien (A), zeigt ab 20. Oktober Werke von Amanda Sage (USA) und Wessi (BG/A). Am Eröffnungsabend wird Amanda Sage den Besuchern ihr Werk erläutern, auch Wessi steht natürlich gerne für Fragen zur Verfügung.

Amanda Sage is at the forefront of a new breed of visionary/interdimensional artists using art as a tool for personal, spiritual, planetary growth and transformation.
Amanda was born April 19, 1978 in Denver, Colorado to her mother YOU and father Jackson, with two brothers still to come. Her childhood was filled with healthy, tropical, media-free, creative freedom in Florida without the distraction of formal schooling until she entered 4th grade in Colorado.
After finishing high school in Boulder, Colorado in 1996 at the Shining Mountain Waldorf School (where ‘coincidentally’ her high school art teacher was the Fantastic/Visionary artist HIKARU, her travels and projects bounced her between Bali, Indonesia and Vienna, Austria. ....... read more

WESSI ist 1971 in Sofia geboren. Malt und Zeichnet seit früher Kindheit, 1991 absolviert sie das Sofioter Gymnasium für Bildende Künste, als Diplomarbeit wird ihr erster Babelturm ausgezeichnet . Dieses Thema führt WESSI auch nach Wien, sie wird an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste aufgenommen, kann 1993-1996 nebenbei Studien an der Meisterschule für Restaurierung und an der «Academy of Art and Design NY» New York absolvieren.
Lebt und arbeitet in Wien und Sofia.

....So wurden die Figuren immer mehr und eines Tages las ich über den Babelturm –
endlich konnte ich meine Welt einordnen und den Wesen ein Zuhause geben. Ich kam nach Wien und hatte den Turm im Kopf, und wie ein Schneckenhaus war er bei mir und war auch mir ein Zuhause geworden. Ich sprach deutsch, verstand, missverstand, lernte weiter und zeichnete- das verstanden dann alle.

Tallahassee, FL.- The Museum of Fine Arts, Florida State University is proud to present "Cute and Creepy" on view from October 14th through November 20th. With the recent and publicly-celebrated exhibitions of Tim Burton at MoMA and Edward Gorey at the Wadsworth Athenaeum, curator Carrie Ann Baade feels that now is the time to revel in the genre of the macabre. "Cute and Creepy" features works in a variety of media by 25 contemporary artists including Jon Beinart, Kelly Boehmer, Scott G. Brooks, Ray Caesar, Kate Clark, Timothy Cummings, Lori Field, Laurie Hogin, Mark Hosford, Jessica Joslin, Richard A. Kirk, Kris Kuksi, Laurie Lipton, Travis Louie, Chris Mars, Elizabeth McGrath, Kathie Olivas, Marion Peck, Judith Schaechter, Greg Simkins, Heidi Taillefer, Christian Rex van Minnen, Martin Wittfooth, Thomas Woodruff and Chet Zar.
Describing the exhibition, Baade says: "After growing up wondering whether all the great art had already been made, I feel there are more amazing artists working now than ever before. Over the past six years, I have exhibited with the artists taking part in this show or have discovered their work through attending their exhibitions. It's been such a pleasure to see the rise of this wave of dark art and the Pop surrealists that this exhibition promotes. To see beauty in the carnivalesque or macabre, in freaks and in monsters, is a matter of aesthetics. Most of us can agree on the artistic value of a Claude Monet or Titian but this work is for a daring audience, an audience open to exploring the strange beauty and the ecstasy inherent in our culture's aversions. There is something that makes us uneasy when confronted by the weird or the unusual. Those who can appreciate both have come to anticipate and enjoy unexpected sensations. Work of this nature is not going to be an underground movement any longer: the grotesque is going mainstream".

The purpose of the Museum of Fine Arts, Florida State University (FSU) is twofold: to enrich the university and the community by exhibiting works of art which expand the understanding of art today and of the past and to serve as a teaching instrument for art instruction, particularly by holding exhibitions of informational value to students and the general public and by providing student artists with an arena to exhibit their work. The Museum of Fine Arts, a division of the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance at Florida State University, at 16,000 sq ft. with 9000 sq. ft. of exhibition space and a permanent collection of over 4000 objects is a major art exhibition space and an integral part of the Tallahassee community. At the time of its formation in 1950 it occupied one small room and was administered by faculty on a volunteer basis who operated without specific funding. Spurred on particularly by the move in 1970 into the Fine Arts Building, a complex that houses Mainstage Theatre as well, and by the establishment of the School of Visual Arts in 1973, the growth of the Museum has been significant and steady. The staff consists of five full-time employees, quarter-time employees who are academic interns, and a rotating population of student volunteers. The choice of quality exhibitions plays a dominant role in the Museum's efforts to reach its goals with respect to the general public and the university community. The lower level exhibitions run concurrently with upper gallery changing exhibitions. The scope ranges from national-impact, scholarly presentations of works never previously exhibited, to the work of regional artists or students. This balance between response to the artistic community and leadership in treating art in a consciously educational way reflects the Museum's perception of its role in the region. In a 5 day intensive painting workshop at the Palais Palffy (same building as the new Phantasten Museum) in Vienna, Amanda Sage is offering a program focused on a revised version of the Misch-Technik, as well as her insight & experience in traveling & living in the international community as a part of the budding movement of Visionary Art.
A former student of Michael Fuchs & student/assistant to Ernst Fuchs for many years, Aman...da Sage is now offering transformational workshops around the globe, diving into an intensive exploration of traditional methods in visual art as well as embarking on a journey to cultivate personal style & voice...
Exploring techniques based on the early renaissance methods of under-painting and glazing, this workshop will focus on observing fundamental principles of light, color & form in the natural and ‘visionary’ worlds.
Developing an eye to see nature through rendering our perception by working in pastel on toned paper, while also following the fundamentals of painting with acrylic & oil.
In learning the basic laws of nature the impossible becomes possible, and by communicating through the visual language we can explore visions and narratives in a way that transcends separation, creating work that speaks straight to the heart.
A perfect introduction, and or expansion of technique, for the beginner & advanced artist.
The ultimate goal of this 5 day workshop is empowerment, that we realize our potential by refining the creative power within. Im Rahmen eines fünftägigen Intensiv-Workshops für Malerei im Palais Palffy in Wien vermittelt Amanda Sage neue grundlegende Kenntnisse zur Misch-Technik – ergänzt durch ihre Einsichten und Erfahrungen von Reisen und aus ihrem Leben in der neuen Bewegung der internationalen Gemeinschaft der Visionary Art KünstlerInnen.
Als ehemalige Studentin von Michael Fuchs und langjährige Studentin und Assistentin von Ernst Fuchs, übermittelt und bietet Amanda Sage nunmehr weltweit in sogenannten „transformational Workshops“ eine intensive Möglichkeit zur Erforschung der traditionellen Methoden der bildenden Kunst. Gleichzeitig gilt es einen Prozess der persönlichen Entwicklung und des Ausdrucks zu entdecken.
Im Mittelpunkt des Workshops steht neben den Methoden aus der frühen Renaissance im Bereich Grundierung und Lasurtechnik die Beobachtung der wesentlichen Grundlagen von Licht, Farbe und Form in natürlichen und „visionären“ Welten. Die Schulung des Auges am Ursprünglichen und die Wiedergabe der Wahrnehmung mit Pastellfarben auf farbigem Papier sind – demgemäß – die Grundlagen der Malerei in Acryl und Öl.
Durch das Erlernen der grundlegenden ursprünglichen Gesetzmäßigkeiten wird das Unmögliche möglich und indem wir in der visuellen Sprache kommunizieren, können wir Visionen erforschen und es erschließen sich in diesem Sinne Darstellungen, die Trennendes überwinden und Arbeiten schaffen, die direkt zum Herzen sprechen:
Somit bietet der Workshop eine perfekte Einführung und/oder Erweiterung der Technik für AnfängerInnen und fortgeschrittene KünstlerInnen.
Ziel des fünftägigen Workshops ist „Empowerment“ – um unsere Potenziale zu erkennen und die uns innewohnende Kraft zu verfeinern. Der Pinsel dient als Werkzeug des Wachstums und der Entfaltung, um unsere Inspiration zu leben und durch Beharrlichkeit, Hingabe und Liebe zum/zur MeisterIn zu werden.
Workshopgebühren: € 500.- (fünf Tage) – Anmeldung und Anzahlung von €250.- bis 23.September

The artist from Coimbra, Santiago Ribeiro is organizing another exhibition in Coimbra, this time titled " Portuguese and Argentine Surrealism" with artists Elizabeth Pantano from Argentina, Paula Rosa and Santiago Ribeiro from Portugal, the exhibition opens on 22th September by 18:30 hours at the gallery of the Recordatório of Queen Saint Isabel, Rua António Augusto Gonçalves, Santa Clara, Coimbra.

In the exhibition entitled " Portuguese and Argentine Surrealism" show about two dozen works of the three artists. Note that the pictures of Santiago Ribeiro, also belong to the exhibition "Surrealist Paintings."

The opening of the exhibition will, among others, attended the three artists.

Elizabeth Pantano of Argentina, is not the first time that is in Coimbra, because it showed her work in the exhibition Surrealism Now International, which was shown in 2010, the House Museum of the Bissaya Barreto Foundation and St. Anne Convent in the Arches of the Garden.

Paula Rosa coming from Lisbon to show her work for the second time in this city.

The exhibition at Art Space of the Recordatório of Queen Saint Isabel is an initiative of the Parish of Santa Clara, chaired by José Simão.

O artista plástico conimbricense, Santiago Ribeiro organiza mais uma exposição em Coimbra, desta vez intítulada de "Surrealismo Português e Argentino"com os artistas Elizabeth Pantano da Argentina, Paula Rosa de Portugal e Santiago Ribeiro de Portugal, a exposição é inaugurada a 22 de Setembro pelas 18.30 horas, na Galeria do Recordatório da Rainha Santa Isabel, na Rua António Augusto Gonçalves, em Santa Clara, Coimbra.

Na exposição intitulada “Surrealismo Português e Surrealismo Argentino”, mostrará cerca de duas dezenas de trabalhos dos três artistas plásticos. De salientar que os quadros de Santiago Ribeiro, integram também a exposição itinerante “Pinturas Surrealistas”.

A abertura da exposição contará, entre outros, com a presença dos três artistas plásticos.

Elizabeth Pantano da Argentina, não é a primeira vez que está em Coimbra, pois mostrou o seu trabalho na exposição Internacional Surrealismo Now, que esteve patente em 2010, na Casa Museu Bissaya Barreto e no Quartel de Sant’Ana, aos Arcos do Jardim.
Paula Rosa vem de Lisboa e mostrará pela segunda vez os seus trabalhos nesta cidade.

A exposição no Espaço de Arte do Recordatório da Rainha Santa Isabel resulta de uma iniciativa da Junta de Freguesia de Santa Clara, presidida por José Simão.

Controversy Follows Conviction of Artist Odd Nerdrum for Alleged Tax Fraud

The Norwegian artist, Odd Nerdrum, was sentenced to two years in prison without bail on Wednesday August 17^th, when a local court in Oslo found him guilty for tax evasion. Critics claim that Nerdrum’s sentence was surprisingly more severe than the punishment recently imposed in a similar case in China concerning the artist Ai Weiwei, who was given a fine and released on house arrest after three months of detainment.
Nerdrum has plead not guilty and will file an appeal.

Famous for his Old master-like paintings, the 67 year old artist was accused of failing to pay the full amount of taxes on $2.6 million (1.8 million euros) of taxable income from sales between 1998-2002, just before he became an Icelandic citizen.
Hearing the verdict, Nerdrum‘s Lawyer Tor Erling Staff told the NTB news agency "I have rarely read such a verdict that allows so little room for doubt. The essential elements [of the case] were not taken into account and we are really not happy. We will appeal.”

Nerdrum stated that he had already paid the taxes years ago, telling the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, “ I paid 50% of the $2.5 million in 1998. And then I paid another 50% on that sum in 2002, adding up to 100% of the $2.5 million. Hasn’t the goal been reached by the Norwegian government yet?”
"Nerdrum has been found guilty of aggravated fiscal fraud," ruled the Oslo district court, defining the crime as aggravated because the artist "put significant work into hiding his assets, especially by placing a large quantity of money in a safety deposit box."

In response to this accusation Nerdrum produced in court, a contract with a U.S gallery, explaining why the money was placed in the safety deposit box. The contract describes the money as a safety fund for some 36 paintings that he created in the 80’s using an experimental medium which collectors complained began to melt when exposed to heat. Nerdrum repainted each of these compositions between 1989-2002, and offered to exchange them, yet many collectors wanted to be compensated with money. So, Nerdrum established the fund as a safety measure against future claims.
Though the problem with these damaged paintings was well known in the U.S. and had damaged Nerdrum‘s reputation, the prosecution asserted that it was merely an elaborate ruse. The court ruled “the only reason for placing cash in a bank box in Austria was to avoid this income being taxed in Norway”.
Nerdrum, who has the neurological disease tourettes syndrome, stated at the beginning of the case that the charges were “rubbish” and that he was “not good with numbers”. This is why he left the accounting to his tax accountant. He said that the 9 year tax investigation and trial were intended to drive him toward suicide.

CHRIS DYER’S MOMENT OF TRUTH REVEALED AT TRIBE 13

Peruvian-Canadian artist and inspired visionary, Chris Dyer, comes to Northern California for the
opening night of his Solo Exhibition, ‘Moment of Truth’ at Tribe 13 Gallery in Ukiah, CA.

On August 4th, 2011, Tribe 13 Art Collective will be celebrating the Opening Night of Moment of Truth, a Solo
Exhibition featuring the Positive Creations of visionary artist, Chris Dyer. The show will take place at the Tribe 13
Gallery, located at 221 N. State St. Ukiah, CA, and hang from August 5th - 26th. It features a massive collection
of his original artwork, created over the course of his life-long journey as an artist, and stemming from what
seems like many lifetimes of experience. While being a renowned member of the global Visionary Art community,
this show marks the first time he will be exhibiting on the United States West Coast and that such a large volume
of his work will be shown together at one time.

Dyer’s art depicts a supremely unique flavor of consciousness-expanding imagery and illustrative symbolism,
drawing upon his experiences travelling the world and calling to mind the common ground between seemingly
distant cultures. As a long-time environmental activist and outspoken instigator of change, his life - like his art - is
characteristic of someone who cares deeply and believes passionately that each one of us has within us the
capacity impact the future of our world. While presenting a diverse and dynamic perspective of reality through his
art, wherein many truths can be found, one stands out from the rest: the principle idea that we are all connected,
not only to each other, but to everything around us and to all moments of the past, present and future.

The Opening Night festivities will take place from 8pm - 2am and include performances by electronic music
producers Dov, Lotus Drops and the local Mendocino County favorite, Energy Alchemist, as well as projected
visual art by master light-bender, Johnathan Singer, most well known for his collaborative work with Alex Grey. In
addition to gracing the walls of the gallery with traditional paintings, Chris Dyer will be honoring his roots in
skateboarding culture, showcasing his nearly obsessive collection of painted skateboards, a ‘Skate-Robot’
created specifically for this exhibition using broken boards gathered up by local community skaters, and two
quarter-pipe installations decked out with his custom designs. He continues to maintain a strong presence in the
skate-world through his alliances with Creation Skateboards and the Satori Movement, two brands that utilize his
artwork to express a more positive side to life.

Beyond opening night, Tribe 13 has also invited Dyer to screen his recently released documentary film on
Tuesday August 9th. The film, entitled Positive Creations, follows him throughout his life, from his early days as a
rowdy Peruvian trouble-maker, through his world-travels as a backpacking wisdom-seeker, to his current home in
Montreal where he and his wife wrestle with the reality of passionate artists in our society. Here they contemplate
the meaning of ‘oneness’ in hopes of coherently depicting their visions to better the world as a whole.

About Chris Dyer
Chris Dyer is a Peruvian artist living in Montreal, Canada. He has been creating art since his childhood and has
developed a unique style that blends the different cultures and lifestyles he is a part of including skateboarding,
traveling, graffiti and spirituality. He is known for his rich detail and colorful soul expressions that have been used
as skateboard graphics, printed on clothing lines, and featured in books, movies and magazines. He has exhibited
his art in galleries worldwide.

Der Mitbegründer des Wiener Phantastischen Realismus, Prof. Ernst Fuchs präsentiert seine Werke in der Bayerwaldstadt! Ernst Fuchs schuf in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten ein weitreichendes, phantasievolles Werk voller Magie und Mythen. Seine genau abbildenden Darstellungen, seine zu Beginn konsequent altmeisterlich angewandte Technik, seine verschmelzenden Bildwelten und Zitate passten und passen bis heute in keinen vorgegebenen Rahmen. Neben Altmeister Ernst Fuchs werden drei weitere international erfolgreiche Künstler in Viechtach ausstellen: Viktor Safonkin aus Prag, Michael Maschka (Nördlingen) sowie der Viechtacher Künstler Reinhard Schmid.

Die Ausstellung wird am Freitag, den 22. Juli 2011 um 19 Uhr im Alten Rathaus Viechtach (Stadtplatz 1) eröffnet und läuft anschließend bis Mitte Oktober. Sie kann Montag bis Freitag von 8 – 17 Uhr, Samstag von 10 – 13 Uhr sowie Sonntag von 14 – 16 Uhr bei freiem Eintritt besichtigt werden.

Im Anschluss an die Vernissage findet am Freitag am Stadtplatz Viechtach eine "Festa Italiana" mit Musiker Daniele aus Florenz statt. Alle sind herzlich eingeladen!

The exhibition will move this time to the House of Culture in the city of Cantanhede, Portugal, EU., with the title " Portuguese and Vietnamese Surrealism in the city of Cantanhede."
This exhibition comes after Santiago Ribeiro, have been exhibited at the Biennale of Florence in Italy, in Warsaw in Poland, twice in Moscow in Russia and in Granada in Spain and have curated the exhibition "International Exhibition 2010 - Surrealism Now "that was shown in Bissaya Barreto Museum House and St. Anna Convent in Coimbra, Portugal, EU.

My interview with fellow visionary tribesman Andy Paciorek

How long do you spend gazing into space contemplating an idea compared with putting pen to paper?

I tend to work more in projects comprised of a number of images on a theme, rather than stand alone single pieces, so a certain amount of time is spent mulling project details, how many pieces, how I will handle them etc. Those ideas may come on the cusp of sleep or out walking or whatever. My rough sketch booking follows that stage and frequently doodle thumbnails done on scraps of paper. This stage is more to ease me into the project than to fully formulate what the actual end pieces will look like. Not all images of a project will be included in this stage. Depending upon a particular project, the final pieces may frequently dictate their own form independent of what I may initially have had in mind, though sometimes I will transfer some visual ideas directly across. Once all the subjects for a project are decided (or if it is a large project, segments of it) then it is pretty much pen to paper. With the projects there's usually a long line of image subjects bustling to get out and they can follow in quite rapid succession if the flow is there; so generally speaking, a fair bit of initial contemplation but then more time executing.

Your artistic output is very high, how do you keep motivated? Do you have a fixed routine? Do you find certain times of day more congenial for working?

There isn't a constant level of output, as with motivation and inspiration, production can come in peaks or troughs. It's very easy to get de-motivated, but the compulsive urge to create tends to override that. Also with my method of art, there is the luxury of being able to work well with other collaborators, either in visual combination as with the Stegorek project or by combining my images with the thoughts and writings of quite a variety of imaginative individuals. This has led to a number of interesting little projects, which has given me excuse to explore different roads and paths, and it keeps the journey intriguing with all the little detours and wanderings. Also should my own idea well ever run dry, there is a reserve of other minds that could help me to dig deeper. With the medium of ink on paper, which at the moment I most frequently use, there is the scope for a higher output than other methods, as it does not require the mixing, fixing, drying and cleaning of some other media. At times when drawing is not flowing or is not possible for whatever reason, I will still end up writing, researching, contemplating possible future projects or adapting older ones for book, internet and sometimes exhibition use, or taking photographs so there is rarely any real dead time. There is no overall fixed routine or work hours, but sometimes it does get late and the pen is still in hand.

What have you been working on today?
Currently I am working on a book project entitled 'Black Earth : A Field-Guide to the Slavic Otherworld'. It is quite epic, so I am interspersing bouts of research, writing, sketchbook roughing and drawing the final pieces.
Given your penchant for folklore, it might be deduced that you are intent on preserving, if not reviving certain traditions. One might even think that you are bargaining with these entities, asking favours of Oak-men in exchange for fame. Is folklore a curiosity for you, or something more?
Well, the Oak-men offer delicious-looking cakes, which are actually glamorised toxic fungi, so that sounds about right.
I do really like curiosities and anomalies in themselves, but for me there is also a deeper aspect to folklore, particularly in respect to apparent encounters with supernatural entities and creatures. It raises questions about the nature of reality, about threshold consciousness and it also sometimes reveals the human habit of trying either to order things beyond their level of knowledge or everyday experience, into a pattern or belief or gives excuse for some others to dismiss anything they don't understand as nonsensical superstition. Folklore, fairy-tales and myths can say a lot about human nature as well as a non-human supernature.
When you treat mythical themes, do you ever feel that art can be a form of spiritual practice?
I think there is an element of that. Even the practice of creation, especially when there is an uncertain material end, could be compared to religious or shamanic ceremonies or ritual. It could possibly date back to the beginning of human civilisation.
What caused man to first create art? Of course there is the practical use of diagrammatic pictures to show directions or mark good hunting grounds etc and body-decoration, jewellery and more elaborate clothing may simply have been a human variant of peacock-feathers, i.e. devices for attracting a mate ; but even in the oldest cave-paintings and non-domain structures and sculpting, there are items of mystery and apparent spirituality. To our current knowledge, such things had no practical earthly function and yet in times of hard survival, such artefacts were still created. That would seem suggestive of either a spiritual purpose or something else in the development of the early human mind that provoked and has persisted in provoking some of the species to create art.

Most of your work springs from the imagination, the astral if you prefer. Do you ever feel compelled to get the watercolours out and paint a landscape, a portrait perhaps?
Many of my images do contain landscapes and portraits of a sort. Currently though if I want to capture these subjects from life I prefer to take photos. It may be something I'd perhaps do in future but there are many other ideas to get out of the way first.

Who inspired you to want to become an artist?
It was comics that first got me drawing as a kid, initially the British funny comics particularly the artists Ken Reid and Leo Baxendale, then shortly afterwards 2000AD and Marvel comics. This in conjunction with mythology and fairy-tale books and also movies and TV shows I enjoyed such as Doctor Who, Monkey, Sinbad films etc. The first art exhibition I went to as a child was to see Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion models of monsters, but in the next gallery room was an exhibition of Gustave Dore prints. Both had a lasting effect upon me. I remember also the first art projects that the teacher set us at secondary school when I was eleven - the first was to find a poem and illustrate it, integrating the text into the picture - I chose The Tyger by William Blake. Then we had to go to the library, find a book on an artist whom we'd never heard of but whose work intrigued us, then we had to copy some of the pictures and write about the artist. For that project I chose Gustav Klimt. Again both of those artists have continued to captivate me. Many other artists and art forms have since continued to intrigue me.
What are the most important things to consider when illustrating?
I have never had any formal training as an artist or illustrator, beyond some basics on a multi-discipline foundation course, if I had maybe I would say composition or tonal value or something, but for me personally the most important consideration is the subject matter not the technique.
What are the most valuable qualities for an artist to have, regardless of style, and who has them to the highest degree?
Perhaps too much is said about artists rather than the art, but I believe sincerity is a high quality. By Sincerity I do not mean that all art should be 'deep and meaningful' but simply that it should be honest and genuine to its principal aim. If that aim is simply to be a commercial success, then it should declare itself so. It is irritating when it seems that an artist conjures some ‘deep’ insincere meaning on afterwards. Likewise to express cynicism in a work is fine, it is an emotive response as valid of expression as any other, but when it appears that an artist is being cynical towards their viewers or mocking or exploiting them, then I feel that does the artist and also art in general no favours. It is perhaps unfair for me however to name any that I feel may be guilty of this, because it may simply be just my feeling and it is possible that my perception of the artist or piece could be wrong. Likewise it may also be inappropriate for me to name any artists who possess any 'higher' qualities because again it would just be a judgement based upon my personal perception.
What is your interpretation of visionary art?
The words 'visionary art' mean totally different things to different people. There are considerable variations associating to different cultures and times and I'm not sure it is something that can be neatly defined. I don't describe my own work as being visionary, it does frequently pertain to subject matter of a fantastic and perhaps sometimes a spiritual nature, and it is frequently concerned with the peripheral, interstitial and subconscious, but does that make it visionary? I don't know and I won't lose sleep over whether it is or isn't. I understand that in the art-world there is some need for a certain level of categorisation, but labels and boxes I feel are far less important than the contents. Artists are of course free to call their art whatever they think best suits, but I simply wouldn't know how to neatly categorise what I do, even if I wanted to. For the sake of a mission statement, I may refer to the 'beautiful~grotesque' in relation to my work, but this is more about the subject matter and the contrast and intermingling of these concepts across different levels, and not to any specific movement or genre. I don't personally subscribe to any manifestos or artificial walls placed between different media and styles of expression; I just follow a compulsion to express myself through the creation of images and the manner in which this occurs seems for a great part to be beyond my choice.

On Friday May 13th, 2011, NovaBelgica Art Gallery in Sint-Truiden, Belgium, will present its second group show: ‘The Light Fantastic: Masters of Magic Realism, Fantastic and Visionary Art’.

Gallery owner and metalsculptor Tim Roosen has gathered a fine group of international artists for this show. Many of them have never before shown their work in Belgium.
From Denmark come Claus Brusen and Tommas, from Holland Peter van Oostzanen and from Austria Sigrid Nepelius. Poland is represented by Jacek Lipowczan, Kriz Cruz and Marcin Kolpanowicz. From France comes Virginie Ropars and from Australia (though currently residing in Berlin, Germany) Leo Plaw.

Belgian artists include Magda Francot, Jef Bertels, Christien Dutoit, Raoul Chanet, Dirk Bosschaert, Roland Menten and Jo Pirard.

Finally, the artists represented by the gallery: Christine Morren, Olga Gouskova, Els Wenselaers, Steve Kirkham, Eddie Symkens and Tim Roosen have also made new work for this exhibition.

tells us the brief narrative of coveted fame with Bad Obsession. This attempt to find fulfillment in things outside oneself and be eluded to fame and power. Even the partial fruition of these is gained by very few; and that, too, at the expense of health, conscience, and life. His muse is portrayed in vibrant colors as if attracted to neon lights just off the canvas. Like the superficiality being captured, each portrait is only a snapshot, a glimpse, into the tarnished and broken prison of addiction. Bad Obsession tells the tale of vices, weaknesses, and the shortcomings of the the human race.

Rhinestone Deities parallels and contrasts the roles of symbiosis, struggle, cohabitation and extinction that are the wages of life on Earth. The organic nature of his subject lay a bridge between humans and other animals, and also the surreal foundation between sculpture and painting. HOCHOSTERWITZ - A METAPHORIC JOURNEY TO THE TOP

In the Austrian province of Carynthia, about 20 km from the St. Egid Chapel in Klagenfurt (famous for Ernst Fuchs' elaborate interior *) you will find the Fortress Castle of Hochosterwitz.

Situated on a 500 foot high rock, you ascend to the castle proper via 14 fortified gates on a 2000 foot long path. There are new and exciting vistas found at every turn of the way, spiralling upwards toward this magnificient structure. It has been said that this castle had never been conquered, and no enemy ever made it past the 4th gate.

Arriving at the top, the view over the land is magnificient in every direction. The illusion persists that on a clear day, one could see as far as Italy.

I am comparing this journey to the spiritual journey one takes while creating art when first setting down a mark. This initial mark is the entry point on your journey through the inner universe. Each successive mark, like one of the gates of the Hochosterwitz, is taking a step closer to revelation. As you ascend, the journey gets more complicated, since the keys to the gates are more like tumblers - you need to assemble that which you have learned so far in the right and specific order to unlock the next step, to defeat the elaborate defense mechanism barring you from going any further.

Imagine now, if you will, that a quick and easy way to the top is provided via a cable car or an elevator. You simply pay at the bottom to be taken to the top. When you get there, you may view the same vista that I do, but what you miss is the journey upwards and the many wondrous things encountered along the way, as well as the appreciation, sense of bliss and satisfaction of having accomplished this ascent. Your view might be the same, but your appreciation of it lacks the experience of the trip and thus I would suspect the understanding and awe of what you see at the top.

Entheogens are the elevators that you may use to spare you the journey to get to the top. In my opinion, it is accomplishing the journey itself that counts here and truly lets you appreciate what you find when you get there.

Rather than a pale snapshot of the top view, when taking this journey on your own power, your art would reflect this whole experience in its entirety.

The experience of spatial depth is to me essential to the effectiveness of an image.
Over the years, I have explored and cultivated the different methods of creating the illusionary space and to get a painterly grip on it.
Here, the linear geometry of previous "Living Structures" is transformed into swinging room organisms, in which the light is, now as before, woven in as a useful imaging focus.
The radical changes in world view and the human need for stable occupation of the Universe mirror themselves equally in all of my work.

Romio founded a school and monastery in Tibet, holding private audience with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, and spearheading the development of contemplative and spiritual art. After the Maoists destroyed his school, Romio fled to Ireland via India and Indonesia, where he resides today with his wife and three daughters. His arrival in Hawaii this summer will historically mark his return to Pacifica, after having been forced to flee and live abroad. Romio will be displaying original T’angkas and giving his address, entitled “A Monastery Without Walls.” This contemplative, artist and teacher is the only living artist shown in both the Museum of Natural History in New York, and the British Museum. He also has shown his work in all of the top galleries in Amsterdam, and Zurich, As well as in the Smithsonian. His celebrated medicine art is collected by Some of the most prominent figures across the globe..

Accompanying this scintillating collection of Visionary Art in the Alchemeyez Galleries will be a vast array of illuminated, meditative and dance music from 36 of the western world’s most prominent electronic producers across three stages. With environments designed to depict elemental symbology and the principles of alchemy, this conference promises to be a historically notable event!

Christian Flora

The artist was born in 1972 in Klagenfurt, Carinthia and studied at the Viennese university for applied art, under Prof. Wolfgang Hutter and Prof. Wolfgang Herzig.
Characteristic for the work of the artist is the trisection of space, figure and a highly structured, made of indefinable material, artificially formed environment.
Mechanical elements are integrated into organic designed worlds – kept in elegant chromatics and orchestrated in precision work.
The mostly female characters, brought to existence in Flora’s pictures seem to intertwine with their environment.
They explore the artificial universe with a natural certainty, still acting alienated though.
Very often these characters seem like a hybrid between man and machine – not knowing what they should expect from these threatening worlds.
Significant in Flora’s work are his preciseness and a fastidious line of strokes.
Christian Flora lives and works in Vienna and Carinthia. His work can be found in private and public collections.

Ernst Fuchs (born February 13, 1930) is a multi talented Austrian painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, architect, stage designer, poet, singer, and one of the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. He studied sculpture with Emmy Steinbock (1943), attended the St. Anna Painting School where he studied under Professor Fröhlich (1944), and entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (1945) where he began his studies under Professor Robin C. Anderson, later moving to the class of Albert Paris von Gütersloh. At the Academy he met Arik Brauer, Rudolf Hausner, Wolfgang Hutter, and Anton Lehmden, together with whom he later founded what has become known as the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. He was also a founding member of the Art-Club (1946), as well as the Hundsgruppe, set up in opposition to it in 1951, together with Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Arnulf Rainer. His work of this period was influenced by the art of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele and then by Max Pechstein, Heinrich Campendonck, Edvard Munch, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso.

During this time, seeking to achieve the vivid lighting effects achieved by such Old Masters as Albrecht Altdorfer, Albrecht Dürer, Matthias Grünewald and Martin Schongauer, he revived and adopted the mischtechnik (mixed technique) of painting. In the mischtechnik, egg tempera is used to build up volume, and is then glazed with oil paints mixed with resin, producing a jewel-like effect. Between 1950 and 1961, Fuchs lived mostly in Paris, and made a number of journeys to the United States and Israel. His favourite reading material at the time was the sermons of Meister Eckhart. He also studied the symbolism of the alchemists and read Jung's Psychology of Alchemy. His favourite examples at the time were the mannerists, especially Jacques Callot, and he was also very much influenced by Jan Van Eyck and Jean Fouquet. In 1958 he founded the Galerie Fuchs-Fischoff in Vienna to promote and support the younger painters of the Fantastic Realism school. Together with Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Arnulf Rainer, he founded the Pintorarium. In 1956 he converted to Roman Catholicism (his mother had had him baptized during the war in order to save him from being sent to a concentration camp). In 1957 he entered the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion where he began work on his monumental Last Supper and devoted himself to producing small sized paintings on religious themes such as Moses and the Burning Bush, culminating in a commission to paint three altar paintings on parchment, the cycle of the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary (1958-61), for the Rosenkranzkirche in Hetzendorf, Vienna. He also deals with contemporary issues in his masterpiece of this period, Psalm 69 (1949-60). (Fuchs, 1978, p. 53). He returned to Vienna in 1961 and had a vision of what he called the verschollener Stil (The Hidden Prime of Styles), the theory of which he set forth in his inspired and grandiose book Architectura Caelestis: Die Bilder des verschollenen Stils (Salzburg, 1966). He also produced several important cycles of prints, such as Unicorn (1950-52), Samson (1960-64), Esther (1964-7) and Sphinx (1966-7; all illustrated in Weis). In 1972 he acquired the derelict Otto Wagner Villa in Hütteldorf, which he restored and transformed. The villa was inaugurated as the Ernst Fuchs Museum in 1988. From 1970 on, he embarked on numerous sculptural projects such as Queen Esther (h. 2.63 m, 1972), located at the entrance to the museum, and also mounted on the radiator cap of the Cadillac at the entrance to the Dalí Museum in Figueras, Catalonia, Spain. From 1974 he became involved in designing stage sets and costumes for the operas of Mozart and Richard Wagner including Die Zauberflöte, Parsifal, and Lohengrin. In 1993 Fuchs was given a retrospective exhibition at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, one of the first Western artists so honored.
