Exhibition SURREALISM NOW – Pousada de Condeixa Coimbra – 15.1. to 15.2.2024

 Coimbra, Portugal – From January 15th to February 15th, the International Surrealism Now exhibition will be on display, organized by the ADFP Foundation and the Portuguese artist Santiago Ribeiro, who has been traveling with his art to numerous corners of the world.  International Surrealism Now began in 2010 organized by the Bissaya Barreto Foundation and now features 126 artists from 52 countries. 

The facility where the event will be held is the Conimbriga Hotel do Paço, whose building origins date back to the 14th century. Here, kings and distinguished members of the European nobility slept. Destroyed in the French invasions, it was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1993, it became a Pousada de Portugal and since 2019, it has been a charming 4-star hotel.

International Surrealism Now to Inaugurate the Palace of Lousã, a Historic 18th Century Building, Oct. 11, 2014

The next edition of the International Surrealism Now 

will be hosted in the Palacio da Lousã, a historic, 18th century building.

International Surrealism Now is a project by the surrealist painter Santiago Ribeiro, who has dedicated himself to promoting the surrealism of the 21st century, through exhibitions worldwide.

"International Surrealism Now" began in 2010 in Coimbra, when Santiago Ribeiro conceived a major exhibition organized by Bissaya Barreto Foundation. This event has been in Conímbriga celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Monographic Museum (the second most visited museum in Portugal). The show has also been in Paris with the support of GAPP - Art Gallery Portugal Presente and Liba WS, organized once again by the Bissaya Barreto Foundation and Santiago Ribeiro, and in Madrid with the support of Yamal Din. After that it went to Dallas with the support of the American surrealist artist Shahla Rosa.

Lately, it has been presented at the medieval Castle of Paço da Ega, organized by Rede de Bibliotecas and House Mayor of Condeixa-a-Nova and at gallery Vieira Portuense located in the center of the city of Porto, Portugal's second-largest city.

At present, "International Surrealism Now" includes artists from 28 countries: Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Spain, USA, Philippines, France, Holland, Indonesia, England, Iran, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Ukraine and Vietnam.

The exhibition consists of a variety of artworks including drawing, painting, photography, digital art and sculpture.

The Palácio da Lousã is an emblazoned building of the XVIII century. Formerly the Palace of Viscondessa do Espinhal, it is classified as Historical Heritage. Located in Lousã's historical center, renowned entry point of the Schist Villages Route, the Hotel offers a warm atmosphere with stunning views of the Lousã Mountains. The Hotel surroundings invite you to enjoy nature. You can observe wild game (deers and wild boars) in their natural habitat and visit a set of secular buildings, such as the medieval Arouce Castle, the wells of the Real Neveiro, where ice was stored in the winter to be later sent to the King's cellar in Lisbon, and the Chapel of our Lady of Sorrows, up on the mountain.

About the exhibition site Roque Gameiro House

Built from 1898 to 1901 as the house of watercolour painter Alfredo Roque Gameiro and his family, this house has an architectural style influenced by Nationalist ideals shared by both intellectuals and politicians of the 90’s generation of the 19th century. The initial project was conceived by Roque Gameiro himself, but architect Raul Lino changed it later. The inside of the main floor is covered by pattern tiles and decorated with small ornaments of colourful tiles at the end of doors and windows. In the dinig room, you will see tiles painted by Bordalo Pinheiro depicting bunches of grapes and ear corns. You can visit the living rooms of Roque Gameiro family, profusely decorated with tiles, as well as temporary exhibits in the two interior floors of the building.

 Lisbon, Portugal, 14-11-2013 — From November 30 to January 4, 2014, The Roque Gameiro House, in Amadora , Lisbon, hosts the exhibition “International Surrealism Now”, conceptualized by Santiago Ribeiro . The event features artworks from 29 countries. The opening is scheduled for 4pm, 30th of November. 

“International Surrealism Now” began in Coimbra, in 2010, when Santiago Ribeiro conceived a major exhibition which was organized by the Bissaya Barreto Foundation. The event was presented in Conímbriga, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Conimbriga Monographic Museum (second most visited museum in Portugal) and, subsequently, went to Paris, with the support of the GAPP – Portugal Presente Art Gallery and Liba WS, and once again organized by the Bissaya Barreto Foundation and Santiago Ribeiro , and was later presented in Madrid, with the support of Yamal Din. 

Santiago Ribeiro requested the partnership of artist Victor Lages (who developed the project ” Utopia of Fantastic Art “), for the purpose of organizing exhibitions in the Lisbon Region, which has already happened at the House of Culture in Setúbal , in Lisbon’s city center , at the Gallery of Caixa de Crédito Agrícola, at the House of Culture Jaime Lobo e Silva, in Ericeira, more recently at Fellini Gallery, in Berlin, with the exhibition entitled “21st Century Portuguese Surrealism” and will soon occur at the Roque Gameiro House , in Amadora .

Among the participating artists, Isabel Meyrelles stands out for her relevancy in the world history of surrealism. She was born in Matosinhos in 1929, studied sculpture with Masters Américo Gomes and António Duarte. Settled in Paris in 1950, where she continued her studies at the Université René Descartes – Paris V-Sorbonne and l’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In 1952 she studied sculpture with Master Zadkine at the “Grande-Chaumière”. She Integrates the surrealist movement, which she considers immortal and closely follows the French surrealism (whose founder was André Breton, with whom she coexisted) and also the work done by her friends, such as Triston Tzara. She also gives special attention to the Portuguese surrealist movement, being friends with António Pedro, O’Neill, Cesariny, Cruzeiro Seixas, among others, and also with Eugénio de Andrade and Natália Correia. Poetry is also an integral part of her life. Isabel Meyrelles was awarded Commander of the Order of Saint James of the Sword, by the President of the Portuguese Republic. Daniel Hanequand, French surrealist recently deceased, is another important name in the field of international surrealism, whose unique artworks are a great contribution for the exhibition’s singular importance. Russian world-renowned artists such as Yuri Tsevtaev, Sergey Tyukanov and Oleg Korolev constitute a link with events in the Russian Federation. Should also be noted the participation of the North American artist Shahla Rosa, of a great name of the 21st century surrealism, as well as the participation of Austrian artist Otto Rapp, who has been carrying out the “Visionary Art” project with exceptional commitment . 

Roque Gameiro House 

Built in Amadora, from 1898 to 1901, as the house of watercolour painter Alfredo Roque Gameiro and his family. It is now opened to the public and some of its living rooms, profusely decorated with tiles by Bordalo Pinheiro, can be visited and admired. The Roque Gameiro House is one of the most notable historical and cultural heritage references in the municipality of Amadora.

50th Year Anniversary of the Monografico Museum with 26 Surrealist Artists

This September the Museum of Conimbriga will celebrate it’s 50^th year anniversary with an exhibition of 26 surrealists artists.
"International Surrealism Now" presents works from twentysix artists from sixteen countries. The exhibit opens on September 1^stat the Monografico Museum, Conimbriga, Portugal

“This ancient setting juxtaposed with contemporary surrealist art will have an extraordinary result" stated Santiago Ribeiro.

Visionary Art Culture Creators Video - Boom 2008

Boom Festival 2008, Portugal :

Liminal Media Stream Presented by the Elvish Nation, Pod Collective, Elfintome and Crystal and Spore, this historic panel connects key art culture creators from North America, Europe and Asia. Exploring the role and place of art in the new culture, this is a tributary in a 120 hr curriculum confluence featuring over 30 presenters and artists from 23 countries. Over the course of a week the liminal village conference and gallery hosted many of the 30,000 festival goers from 80 countries.
