OTTO RAPP

About my work: These are universal archetypes that may be found deep inside our collective unconscious. While seemingly extraterrestrial and alien, they are also strangely familiar. It will take the viewer into an area that they might have been before in another existence or have entered in their dreams. It is a 'method in this madness' but everything arises  by elimination of conscious guidance. The work grows seemingly by itself, like frost flowers on a windowpane.

I started a new body of work in 2015, the „Neolithic“, in which I picked up the theme of the „stoneperiod“ (1970-1980) again.
Yet it was my intention to discover new minds capes, fresh painterly territory through the integration of my more abstract painting style of the last decades .
The interaction of the metaphors WALL and STARS opened up a new PERSPECTIVE OF TRANSZENDENCE into a collective sphere of life beyond the wall.
In this sense the exhibited works show also, how I expand my contents through the „method of transformation“.

CORNELIA SIMON-BACH

Does the artist actually create his imagery or is his imagination in the end only a sort of magical reception apparatus, antenna and amplifier? The artist is the recipient of numerous messages, wisdoms, symbols and parables and does not know the sender. The dreamer is a bridge between sleeping and waking. He is the bridge connecting the two shores. But each by itself is only a half, until both together make a whole.

WOLFGANG HUTTER PASSED AWAY

This is very sad -another Icon of the Fantastic Realists is gone. This would have gone largely unnoticed (what a shame, actually) were it not for Sigrid Nepelius posting in her German language webzine Phantastisch. A quick websearch reveals that there is nothing at all, other than this article on Phantastisch. The papers didn't notice, and neither the english nor the german wikipedia articles had been updated.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THIS ARTICLE:
The Phantasten Community mourns one of its greats. The Viennese painter and graphic artist Wolfgang Hutter (13 December 1928) passed away on September 26, 2014. Hutter was a founding member of the Art Club and one of the main representatives of the famous Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. His magical canvasses are worked out to the smallest detail and reveal his sensitive handwriting. Hutter's art encompasses also tapestries and mosaics such as the mosaic floor in the Theater an der Wien. For three decades, Wolfgang Hutter worked as a professor at the Vienna University of Applied Arts. In 1977 he received the Prize of the City of Vienna for Visual Arts, and 2011 he was honored with the Golden Medal for Service to the City of Vienna. Let's hope that the death of Wolfgang Hutter is no longer ignored in the public media. Such a large and internationally important Austrian artist and his family should in any case be granted the final tribute in the form of an honoring obituary. Many thanks to Gerhard Habarta without whom the sad news of the death of Wolfgang Hutter and this little obituary would not exist.

Swiss Artist HR Giger died yesterday at age 74

The renowned Swiss artist H.R. Giger has died at the age of 74, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall. Giger, who passed away in a Zurich hospital, was most famous for the alien monster he created for the movie of the same name.
The terrifying creature and sets he created for Ridley Scott’s film earned him an Oscar for special effects in 1980. In the art world, Giger is appreciated for his wide body of work in the fantastic realism and surrealistic genres.
...............READ MORE

HR Giger was a frequent visitor in Vienna, the birthplace of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and the home of his friend and mentor Ernst Fuchs. Such an occasion happened at the Exhibition at the Kunsthaus Wien - it may have been the last time they saw each other.
Professor Ernst Fuchs was invited as the special guest speaker to say some words about Giger and his artwork. He is known to have greatly influenced HR Giger. Both are close and long standing friends and are known to greatly admire each other’s vast catalogue of works. (from the blog by Fantastic Visions)

He also met occasionally with Vienna based artists such as

HELNWEIN RETROSPECTIVE AT THE ALBERTINA MUSEUM VIENNA

HELNWEIN RETROSPECTIVE AT THE ALBERTINA MUSEUM VIENNA

This exhibition will display about 200 works from 1969 to the present.

Exhibition duration: 24 May - 13 October 2013

"Well, the world is a haunted house, and Helnwein at times is our tour guide through it. Not all of Gottfried's work is on a canvas. A lot of it is the way he's approached life. And it doesn't take someone knowing him to know that. You take one look at the paintings and you say "this guy has been around." You can't sit in a closet - and create this. This level of work is earned. As an artist my strongest reaction to Helnwein's work is that it challenges me to be better at what I do. There are very few people that achieve utter excellence in what they do. And I think that Gottfried Helnwein is certainly one of those people."
