Ernst Fuchs - Frau Lot

“Knowing doesn’t reside in the knower,
nor does truth in what is known,
but in between.”
– “A Mystical Epistemology”, Peter Reason

Mystery has been banished; everything must be defined. And yet, while analytical thought bestows many gifts upon civilization, we remain insatiable. As if the unknown, itself, is the very ferment of community, humility, love….and life.

Embracing mystery as a source of inspiration, Fantastic Realists from around the world present this exhibition of numinous, visionary art – to reawaken feeling and intuition marginalized in today’s cynical analyses.

Like the mystical traditions of countless cultures, their works assign symbols to The Unknowable, reaching through the ephemeral illusion we have come to know as reality, to an underlying, timeless, spiritual narrative. Universal mythology is interpreted with vivid imagination, and masterful technique renders it believably real.

Beneath the veil of seeming, an intuitive, visual language suggests that we are all part of something glorious, yet unrevealed. Fulfillment reflects from mystery in the primordial image, encouraging us to find, within ourselves, a unique understanding beyond the grasp of intellect…a feeling of connection…our own personal harmony with an ancient melody that is often unheard amidst the dissonance of perpetual immediacy.

Creating Custom Books for the Holidays

Creating Custom Books for the Holidays?
Blurb's Book Making Boot Camp Makes It Easy!

(sponsored post) - here are some examples from  fellow artists:
It could be just me, but I think it's much easier to learn how to do something by watching a video (even if it's a short one). For instance, making your own custom book seems like it would be really complicated, but then you watch a video walking you through it and it becomes pretty understandable. Here's a quick video from Blurb (less than 3 minutes) that quickly walks you through publishing your own book using their BookSmart tool — sort of a book making boot camp. Save 20% on photobooks which is great news if you're thinking ahead to the holidays and making a gift to send. Special offer for new customers only. Save 25% on photobooks… even better for those of you who are new to Blurb books. Just don't wait because these deals end October 31st.

Take advantage of these offers by using the respective promo code at the check-out.

Swiss Artist HR Giger died yesterday at age 74

The renowned Swiss artist H.R. Giger has died at the age of 74, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall. Giger, who passed away in a Zurich hospital, was most famous for the alien monster he created for the movie of the same name.
The terrifying creature and sets he created for Ridley Scott’s film earned him an Oscar for special effects in 1980. In the art world, Giger is appreciated for his wide body of work in the fantastic realism and surrealistic genres.
...............READ MORE

HR Giger was a frequent visitor in Vienna, the birthplace of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and the home of his friend and mentor Ernst Fuchs. Such an occasion happened at the Exhibition at the Kunsthaus Wien - it may have been the last time they saw each other.
Professor Ernst Fuchs was invited as the special guest speaker to say some words about Giger and his artwork. He is known to have greatly influenced HR Giger. Both are close and long standing friends and are known to greatly admire each other’s vast catalogue of works. (from the blog by Fantastic Visions)

He also met occasionally with Vienna based artists such as

Facebook Morality Apostles

It disturbs me deeply to see some of my Facebook artist friends get repeatedly into trouble by having their artwork flagged by those self-appointed morality-apostles that have nothing better to do than visiting artist pages in order to flag what they deem 'inappropriate' content.

this is a old painting of mine that had also been flagged once!

Plain and simple, this is a form of harassment that should at least be filtered as to whether the 'complaints' are actually warranted.
As it stands, warnings and take-downs happen automatically without much recourse. Blocking and banning such people does not help any: they can still have access to your public pages and continue their harassment unabated, albeit they can no longer post comments once you block them (if indeed you can find out who it is in the first place).
There really is no protection against such - and let me make this perfectly clear, lest you think this does not affect you: one can flag ANYTHING as 'inappropriate' and Facebook response is automatic and handled by a robot. Complain about it and all you get is a reply that is also just a formulated auto reply.

UPDATE:  In some instances a complaint about a post on facebook is referred to a outsourcing company called oDesk - to learn more about what this could mean to you (and your privacy), read this article by Emma Barnett, Digital Media Editor, The Telegraph:

One instance I remember a picture of Michelangelo's David had been flagged (on another network that was supposed to be a art site!) so these morality-sniffers are all over the internet.

This is a ongoing problem, and I had posted about this subject before, several years ago (Wednesday, October 1, 2008):

Joos van Cleve - Virgin and Child, 1525

While back then my trongue-in-cheek response was humorous (read MORE HERE), after all this time I cannot find any humor in the insane actions that continue to haunt sites such as facebook!

OK - better?

I myself had been flagged on Facebook  before for posting this picture, titled 'Godina' by fellow artist
Dragan Ilić Di Vogo - Godina

One of the latest artist to fall victim to the "facebook morality squad" is my friend PETER GRIC - a 'signature work' of his that currently hangs in the Phantasten Museum in Vienna, simply called 'Angel' has been flagged and a take-down noticed sent. Potentially the repercussions might be serious, since Peter had been a co-administrator of the Visionary Art Page on which the above painting by di Vogo was posted, and so he had also been warned about this before (though it was I that posted it) - therefore, he is deemed a 'repeat offender'.

PETER GRIC - Metamorphosis III (Angel)
We live in sad and disturbing times indeed. Even the Victorian Age was more tolerant than this!

And here is a recent post on my site VISIONARY ART EXHIBITION:

Susannah Martin article in Huffington Post hit by Facebook censorship

ANOTHER UPDATE: I found this great article on Gawker, titled

How Facebook Lets Whining Trolls Censor Everyone

ANDROID AWAKENING - EXHIBITION PETER GRIC AT COPRO GALLERY

Android_awakening
Android Awakening
Androids are machines designed to look and act like humans, machines that can be programmed and controlled in order to serve their masters. They may appear like intelligent and self-determining beings, but due to the absence of consciousness their decisions are limited to mere reactions.
It appears to me that most of us humans live in a state of such an android mind. We are conditioned and programmed by traditions, religions, societies and demagogies, regularly receiving uploads of beliefs, "political correctness updates" and reductionistic scientific models describing our reality. No matter what programs we allow to take action in our lives, they all have one aspect in common: They distract us from the genuine reality of our consciousness, our awareness, they limit our freedom of choice, they cripple our creativity and our potentials. They downgrade us to remotely controlled units of those who are in leading positions. This way we become ruled by male-dominant ruthlessness, insatiable and power-hungry technocrats which were incubated in the corrupt political and financial hierarchies of our post-democratic reality. Our lives are defined by materialistic morons who aren't even able to recognize their own consciousness and consequently deny the existence of any consciousness at all, coming up with ridiculous assumptions that consciousness is just an "illusion", a by-product of elementary particles which somehow just blindly and coincidentally transformed into a highly organized biosphere in some billions of years.
We are sedated and distracted by a vast machinery of entertainment, fashion, fear, guilt, terror and "anti-terror", misinformed, blinded and dehumanized. Nevertheless, I believe that we are more than Androids and that we can get rid of all these mind-parasites who dictate us what we are allowed to believe, to achieve, to wish, to dream about, to eat, to drink, to smoke, to enjoy. We have the potential to make real decisions, we can deinstall all that crap from our brains! So unplug the cables, cut the wires, wake up androids, remember who you really are!
Peter Gric

"None are so hopelessly enslaved, as those who falsely believe they are free. The truth has been kept from the depth of their minds by masters who rule them with lies. They feed them on falsehoods till wrong looks like right in their eyes."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
